Once upon a time…

The Persian King, Shahryar, discovered his wife’s infidelity and declared all women to be unfaithful. He began to marry a succession of beautiful women, only to have them executed the morning after each marriage.

One particularly beautiful woman, Scheherezade, offers herself as the next bride. On the night of her marriage to Shahryar, she begins to tell a tale of wonder and excitement, but does not end it. The king is forced to postpone her execution in order to hear the end of the tale. This goes on for 1,001 nights; she tells tales of Aladdin and his magic lamp, Ali Baba and his forty thieves, and the mighty sailor Sinbad.

After Scheherezade’s tales and demonstrations of her devotion, the king realizes his love for her and spares her life. And they lived happily ever after…
